Council leader reacts to LGR statement

The government has announced that local government reorganisation will be paused in Gloucestershire, and the unitary elections scheduled for May 2027 will no longer be going ahead. Instead, Tewkesbury Borough Council, which was due to be abolished with the shift to the unitary authority, will have elections in May. 

Cllr Richard Stanley, the leader of Tewkesbury Borough Council, stated:

“The government has flip flopped on this decision which is increasingly frustrating. Local residents and council workers need clarity and a clear direction on the future of our councils. This includes informing councils of the expected term borough councillors will be serving, which is currently unknown.”
