Craig Thurling has been elected as the new district councillor for The Rissingtons Ward, becoming the Liberal Democrats’ newest councillor on Cotswold District Council.

In a hard-fought campaign, Cllr Thurling secured 321 votes, defeating the Conservatives on 268 votes, with Reform UK close behind in third place. The Green Party finished fourth in the contest. The by-election was triggered following the resignation of the previous Green councillor on health grounds.

Speaking after his victory, Cllr Craig Thurling said:

“I’m thrilled to have been chosen by residents in The Rissingtons to be their district councillor. It’s a real honour to represent such a beautiful part of the Cotswolds and I want to thank everyone who put their trust in me.

“To those who supported other candidates, or didn’t vote at all, I want you to know that I will work hard for you and be a strong voice on the issues that matter most locally.

“My campaign focused on three clear priorities: tackling the cost of living, protecting local hospital services, and getting more road repairs. I’ll now use my position on the council to keep pushing on these issues and to stand up for residents whenever concerns are raised.”

Cameron Thomas MP visited the ward to join the impressive campaigning efforts, meeting with Craig and pledging his support for Craig's success as a local Lib Dem councillor.

“Craig will be a fantastic local councillor. From speaking to people on the doorstep, they are enthusiastic to see him elected, especially to keep Reform out of the area. It is clear Councillor Thurling will be a hard-working addition to the team, putting the community first and fighting for a local voice."

Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate for the North Cotswolds, Paul Hodgkinson said:

“As we head towards the next General Election, it’s increasingly clear that the real contest here will be between the Liberal Democrats and Reform UK. I would urge Green supporters and all progressive voters who are appalled at the prospect of a Reform government propped up by the Conservative party to unite behind me the Liberal Democrats so we can deliver the change our area and our country needs.”
