Local councillor calls out dangers of illegal electric motorcycles

Following a string of concerns from local residents, County Councillor for Winchcombe and Woodmancote, Cheryl Agg, has been in touch with both Gloucestershire Constabulary and MP Cameron Thomas regarding the increasing use of illegal electric motorcycles, often mistaken for e-bikes. 

The law is clear in that many of these vehicles are classified as motorcycles and must meet standards set out by the DVLA in regards to licensing, insurance, tax, and safety. Nevertheless, the increasing use of these vehicles is posing a noticeable danger to residents using footpaths, public roads and recreational areas. 

Cheryl said: 

“Thank you to both Cameron Thomas MP and Nick Evans, Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner, for taking the concerns of residents seriously regarding the increasing use of illegal electric motorcycles, often incorrectly referred to as e-bikes, in our communities. I am encouraged that there is recognition of the growing concerns being raised by residents."

Other local councillors have also raised concerns regarding electric motorcycles, including Cllr Sarah Hands for Innsworth. She added:

“The rise in use of these illegal electric motorcycles and modified e-scooters poses a direct risk to residents using footpaths and recreational areas. I am working with the Neighbourhood Policing Team and have raised the concerns on numerous occasions with Gloucestershire Constabulary. Residents should not feel threatened or have concerns of their safety when walking around their homes, especially on designated footpaths.”
