Liberal Democrat Councillor George Porter was invested as the new Mayor of Tewkesbury Borough on Tuesday 12 May 2026. The ceremony was held at Shurdington Community Centre, and featured performances from the Shurdington Community Choir and violinist Tetiana Hnilytska.

He succeeds Cllr Kashan Pervaiz, who recently ran the London Marathon in support of his chosen charities as Mayor.

George has chosen the Gloucestershire Federation of Young Farmers, a local branch of the National Federation of Young Farmers, and Let's Talk Well, a charity providing free counselling and support for young people, as his charities for the year.

Councillor Porter is committed to ensuring young people in the borough are represented and listened to. He said:

“I'm excited to work alongside our residents, champion local projects, and proudly represent our borough. I have chosen these two charities to advocate for young people, and to encourage them to recognise their achievements. Mental health is vitally important, especially in the digital age, and young people are exposed to the dangers of social media every day. These charities help with supporting young people's mental health and provide opportunities for them in the community.”

We offer our congratulations to George on his investment as Mayor.
